What is Selfy?

Selfy is a self-pack container service that enables you to move house cheaply. You simply book a container, we deliver it to you, you load it, we transport it, then you unload it.

Moving house with a removalist by default will come with professional loading and unloading of the truck / container by qualified removalists. With Selfy, you take control of loading and unloading the container yourself; we just manage the logistics of moving the container from your pickup location to your delivery point.

Since you're taking control of loading and unloading the container, you will save money relative to a fully-managed removalist service.

02.

We deliver it

Your preferred container will be delivered on a tilt tray or side loading truck to your residential/commercial address. Make sure you have a suitable location and sufficient space for the placement of the container. We can deliver these units to each capital city throughout Australia (regional areas by request).

03.

You load it

We’ll provide you with some tips on how to pack the container safely and recommend using industry quality materials to secure and restrain your items as you pack the container in preparation for transit.

Once all packed, you just need to take photographs of the packed container and send them to us so that we can determine the total volume of furniture and items being moved and then you lock the container with your own padlock.

04.

We move it

Once packed, we will collect and deliver your container locally, or you have the option to move the container interstate (metro areas) throughout Australia (regional locations by request). We work on 14-day transit times from the time the container is collected to delivered. These times can vary depending on the locations and time of year.

Our team will keep you informed so you're well prepared for the delivery timing. Make sure you arrange insurance for your goods in case they are damaged in transit as this is not included by default.

05.

You unload it

Your locked container arrives to your new address for unloading. Overall timings are based around 3 days to load, 14 days to deliver, 3 days to unload.

Frequently asked questions

We can assist in every capital city in Australia. Coverage for regional areas will be case-by-case basis.

20ft containers are:
  • 6.1m L x 2.5m W x 2.9m H
  • Internal capacity of 37 cubic metres
  • The empty container weighs 2.2 tonne
40ft containers are:
  • 12.2m L x 2.5m W x 2.9m H
  • Internal capacity of 76 cubic metres
  • The empty container weighs 3.5 tonne

Majority of the containers will be delivered and collected on a 4 tonne capable tilt tray truck. 20ft container weighs 2.12 tonne, so in this instance you have 1.88t of household goods or freight that you can load safely into the unit. If the items that you’re looking to load weigh more than 1.8 tonne, no stress! We have both tilt trays and semi-trailers that can carry much more weight. Let us know your estimate and we can tailor the pricing appropriate to your needs.

If your street has no parking restrictions and is reasonably level then the container can be delivered and placed on the street provided this is permitted by your local council, you should check this with them. If restrictions apply, then you may need a permit from your local council, again the council can advise you on this. Permits need to be obtained in advance as some councils can take 7-10 days to supply them.

It’s very important that the container is placed on stable, flat ground. You must have some hardwood blocks ready to support each corner of the container as it’s positioned into place. These prevent the ground surface from any impacts of the container and can assist to level it. Hardwood blocks can be sourced from any leading hardware supplier. Tilt tray trucks lower the container off the back of the truck lengthways whereas a side loading truck places the container next to the truck’s trailer. This needs to be considered when siting your container’s final placement. Area of placement needs to be free from obstructions such as low hanging branches, overhead wires, or awnings. You’ll need to consider which end you’d like the doors of the container facing. Selfy containers only have doors on one end so it’s important we know which way you want the container facing so we can ensure it’s placed on the truck facing the right direction otherwise rework and additional costs can be incurred.

We work on 14-day transit times between main cities. Shorter distance journeys will likely be faster.

Let us help you! Selfy has access to some of Australia’s best moving companies. Just let us know if you need a hand and we can arrange some quotes to include this labour assistance.

Simple. You either purchase your own padlock, or we can deliver one to you.

Provided your car doesn’t exceed the internal dimensions, each container has tie down points where you can securely restrain your car in the container. There are guides available to step you through how to safely secure the vehicle.

The below items are restricted due to state and territory quarantine requirements or classifications for logistics:
  • Flammable or dangerous goods of any kind
  • Food items and other perishable goods
  • Explosives/firearms
  • Illegal items of any kind
  • Plants/animal material

Container tilt trays are used to deliver and collect 20ft containers typically. Larger 40ft containers will require side loader semi-trailers due to their size. These containers are almost always moved interstate or longer distances through the Interstate Rail Network.

Selfy does not provide insurance for your goods should they be damaged while loading/unloading or in transit and so you will need to arrange this separately. Selfy will provide some compensation for loss or damage that occurs in relation to certain limited and specified events only (e.g the truck carrying your container overturns) but this may not cover the full cost of your goods and so it is important you consider this when making decisions in relation to insurance. You will also need to submit photographs of the packed container to us so that we can ascertain the total volume of furniture and items being moved. Please ensure you have read and understand our terms and conditions for more information.

Whether you need the container for one more day or 1,000 more days we have you covered. Let our team know your requirements and we will provide with a tailor-made quote to suit your specific needs.

Absolutely. We can assist with any size container you would like to purchase with both new and used options available.

Simply advise our team if you want to purchase a container. They’ll confirm if you’re looking for a new or used container. Used containers are ex shipping containers and are typically up to 40% cheaper than a new one.

Simply put is that they have been in work either around the country or the world on ships/trains and trucks. Their paint job may not be pristine and they may have some light panel damage but they are structurally sound and certified compliant to the worldwide standard. We will provide photos, where possible, of the interior and the exterior of these used units so you can make an informed decision prior to purchase.

Placing the container in the less-than-ideal location may lead to unintended consequences and risks for both the driver and the customer themselves.
Risks include:
  • Electrocution
  • Slips, trips and falls
  • Falls from height
  • Impact between person/s and equipment
  • Unrestrained loads moving in transit and falling onto person/s
  • Strain injuries from uneven ground making the doors hard to open

Placing the container in the less-than-ideal location may lead to unintended consequences and risks for both the driver and the customer themselves.
To mitigate risks:
  • Consider the proposed container placement prior to its arrival, including the path the driver has to take to its final destination that you have chosen, e.g., are there obstacles, overhead power lines, or any other dangers?
  • Choose a suitable area for unpacking on level, solid ground with sufficient space to open doors and provide safe access.
  • Restrain the loads in the container using straps and cords, to ensure they do not move in transit.
  • Remember containers are extremely heavy, rigid pieces of equipment. Doors can be heavy and depending upon the level of the ground you have placed them, hard to open.

Placing the container in the less-than-ideal location may lead to unintended consequences and risks for both the driver and the customer themselves.
To restrain the load:
  • Every container used by Selfy has a number of tie down points from which you can easily secure your heavy items to prevent them from moving in transit.
  • Ensure that there is effective load restraint as you are packing the container. The container can experience movements including but not limited to tilting, jostling, shunting, and vibrating upon collection, delivery, and during transit. This movement can cause damage to your goods if they are not packed and restrained properly and this is at the customer’s risk.
  • When opening a container, be mindful that if your items have not been secured properly they may have moved and can be pressing upon the door which is a potential injury risk when the door is opened.
  • Always open the door of the container slightly, keep your weight against the door so it acts as a shield for any items that have moved.
  • Make sure you are wearing covered shoes to protect you from anything that has moved in transit and falls out upon opening of the door.
